New Minecraft Update Finally Allows Players to Sit Down

Jul 8, 2026

Minecraft's upcoming update adds a long-requested feature: players can now sit using a new cushion. The update is expected to arrive this fall, while players with access to preview builds can try the feature now.

New Minecraft Update Finally Allows Players to Sit Down

Minecraft is winning players over with one of its smallest-sounding additions in years: the upcoming update finally lets players sit down.

That feature was highlighted during a closer look at what’s coming next for the sandbox giant. Alongside other additions such as straw beds and a new biome, Mojang is introducing a cushion that allows players to take a seat in-game. It’s a modest change on paper, but for a community that loves building lived-in spaces and roleplaying inside them, it lands as a surprisingly big deal.

According to the developers, the new cushion could end up being used in ways even they haven’t predicted. That tracks with Minecraft’s long history of players taking simple tools and turning them into elaborate creations, from cozy homes and taverns to full-blown adventure maps and social roleplay spaces.

The broader update is currently expected to reach all players this fall. For those already using preview builds, however, the sitting feature is available to try right now.

A Tiny Feature With Huge Community Appeal

The excitement around sitting might seem funny from the outside, but longtime Minecraft players immediately understood why the reaction was so strong. This is something fans have wanted for 17 years, and until now, actually sitting usually meant relying on mods or awkward workarounds.

For players who care about immersion, decoration, or roleplay, being able to naturally sit in a world they’ve spent hours shaping adds a layer of personality that was oddly missing for a very long time.

"[The] ability to sit down without mods feels MASSIVE," one fan commented on the announcement video on YouTube.

"The way I cheered at the announcement of being able to sit, you’d think Mojang announced an End Drop," said another.

Those reactions capture exactly why this update is getting so much praise. Sometimes the most appreciated Minecraft features aren’t the flashiest ones—they’re the additions that make the world feel more complete.

More Changes Around Minecraft

Elsewhere in Minecraft-related news, Microsoft recently began restructuring Xbox. As part of that shift, Minecraft leadership will now report directly to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.

Sharma has said the Minecraft IP has been "massively underinvested" in, even though the franchise already spans multiple spin-offs, a large merchandising presence, and a movie that came close to earning a billion dollars at the box office.
