First Look at Ghost of Tsushima Legends Anime Character Art

Crunchyroll used Anime Expo to unveil an early look at the upcoming anime based on Ghost of Tsushima, with the spotlight placed on the game’s Legends multiplayer side. The preview art introduced several key figures tied to that supernatural corner of the series, including the Assassin, Ronin, and Hunter, all of whom are set to cross paths with the anime’s main character, described as one of the last surviving samurai.

Rather than focusing purely on the grounded historical tone many players associate with Ghost of Tsushima, this adaptation appears to lean into the mythology-driven identity of Legends. That makes the newly revealed character art especially notable, since those classes helped define the co-op mode’s darker, more fantastical style in the game.

The creative team behind the adaptation

The character designs come from Takashi Okazaki, widely recognized as the creator of Afro Samurai. On the production side, Aniplex is handling the anime adaptation. The studio’s past work includes Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, and Sword Art Online.

Direction is being led by Takanobu Mizuno, while script duties are in the hands of Satoshi Maejima and Gen Urobuchi of NITRO PLUS. Taken together, the staff suggests a version of Ghost of Tsushima that could emphasize both dramatic action and the eerie folklore influences that made Legends stand apart.

"Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project, and Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a stunning new anime series."

A different angle on Ghost of Tsushima

For fans of the PlayStation title, the most interesting part of this first reveal may be the choice to highlight Legends so directly. While the original game is known for its samurai story and sweeping atmosphere, Legends pushed the setting into a more mythic direction, bringing in archetypes like the Assassin, Ronin, and Hunter to support its multiplayer-focused gameplay.

That approach gives the anime plenty of room to explore a side of Ghost of Tsushima that already feels tailor-made for stylized animation: supernatural themes, iconic combat roles, and a journey shaped by encounters with larger-than-life figures.

The Ghost of Tsushima anime is planned to launch exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027.
